How to say no
Dutch has two words for 'not'. One rule tells you which.
To make a Dutch sentence negative you need either niet or geen. Picking the wrong one is one of the most common beginner mistakes, and it is easy to fix.
Is the thing you are cancelling 'a something' or 'some something'? Use geen. Otherwise use niet.
Ik heb geen tijd.
I have no time.
'time' has no 'the' → geen
Ik heb geen auto.
I don't have a car.
'a car' → geen
Ik ken hem niet.
I don't know him.
'him' is a specific person → niet
Het werkt niet.
It doesn't work.
cancelling an action → niet
Dat is niet mijn tas.
That's not my bag.
'my bag' is specific → niet
✗Ik heb niet tijd.
✓Ik heb geen tijd.
'tijd' has no 'the' or 'my' in front of it, so it takes geen.
Where does niet go? Usually at the end. But it jumps in front of a describing word or a place.
Ik werk vandaag niet.
I'm not working today.
at the end
Het is niet duur.
It isn't expensive.
in front of the describing word
Ik ga niet naar kantoor.
I'm not going to the office.
in front of the place
