How to read the clock

Dutch tells the time by looking ahead to the coming hour. Half drie is half on the way to three: 2:30.

!

watch out

half vier is 3:30, not 4:30. This is the mistake every English speaker makes for months.

  1. 1:00 drie uur · :05 vijf over drie · :10 tien over drie · :15 kwart over drie
  2. 2:20 tien voor half vier · :25 vijf voor half vier · :30 half vier
  3. 3:35 vijf over half vier · :40 tien over half vier · :45 kwart voor vier
  4. 4:50 tien voor vier · :55 vijf voor vier

From :20 to :40 everything hangs on the half hour: tien voor half, vijf voor half, half, vijf over half, tien over half.

Timetables, announcements and appointments use the 24-hour clock, read as hours uur minutes: 14:30 is veertien uur dertig.

Add the part of the day when it matters: 's ochtends (morning), 's middags (afternoon), 's avonds (evening), 's nachts (night).
