even, maar, toch, hoor, wel — the tone knobs

Dutch has a set of tiny words that carry no dictionary meaning but do all the emotional work. Textbooks skip them. Native speakers use one every second sentence.

• Kun je helpen?

  Can you help?

  flat, almost demanding

• Kun je even helpen?

  Could you help a sec?

  even = small, casual, no big deal

• Doe maar.

  Go ahead.

  maar = permission, encouragement

• Je komt toch?

  You're coming, right?

  toch = seeking confirmation

• Geen probleem hoor.

  No problem at all.

  hoor = warmth, reassurance

• Ik kan wel komen.

  I can actually come.

  wel = contradicts an assumption

• Doe gewoon normaal.

  Just act normal.

  gewoon = just, simply

If a request feels blunt, add even. If a statement feels harsh, add hoor. Those two alone will carry you a long way.
