The little words that make you sound human
even, maar, toch, hoor, wel. They mean nothing and change everything.
Dutch is full of tiny words that no dictionary can really translate. They do not add information. They add tone — the difference between an order and a friendly ask.
Leave them out and your Dutch is correct but sounds cold, like a robot handing out instructions.
✗Kun je helpen?
✓Kun je even helpen?
even means 'just for a second'. It turns a demand into a small favour. Use it constantly.
✗Geen probleem.
✓Geen probleem hoor.
hoor adds warmth and reassurance. It says: really, it's fine, don't worry.
Here are the five that do the most work. Do not translate them — learn the feeling.
even
just, for a moment
Softens any request. Kun je even kijken?
maar
go on, go ahead
Gives permission. Doe maar = go ahead, that's fine.
toch
right? / isn't it?
Asks for agreement. Je komt toch? = You're coming, right?
hoor
(warmth, reassurance)
Softens a statement. Nee hoor = no, but nicely.
wel
actually, I do
Pushes back on a no. Ik kan wel = I actually can.
If a request sounds too blunt, add even. If a reply sounds too harsh, add hoor. Those two alone will carry you a long way.
watch out
Do not try to work out what these mean word by word. There is no English word for hoor. Copy whole sentences that contain them and the feeling will arrive on its own.
